No Spacers/No Bands

Years ago, orthodontic patients were called “Tin Grins” because of the unsightly metal bands that were placed around each tooth. While orthodontic bands are no longer used on front teeth, many orthodontists still place them on back teeth. Unfortunately, the process for placing these bands hasn’t changed. Initially, small donut-shaped pieces of rubber are placed between the teeth to create space for the bands (hence the name). Having spacers feels similar to having a piece of meat stuck between your teeth and patients frequently complain of significant soreness. In addition, the metal bands that encircle the teeth also extend underneath the gums creating a “plaque trap” and increasing the risk of decay or gum disease. It takes approximately one week to create sufficient space between the teeth to place orthodontic bands, which requires an additional appointment, and once the braces are removed, the space for the bands still remains, resulting in annoying areas where food can become lodged between the teeth.

We’ve overcome all of the problems with orthodontic bands…whenever possible, we don’t use them. Instead, we bond small orthodontic brackets directly to the teeth. Our advanced Indirect Bonding technique allows us to place a complete set of orthodontic brackets quickly and precisely in one short visit. And because we don’t use orthodontic bands, it’s easier to clean your teeth and gums. Dentists also prefer brackets instead of bands due to the improved cleanliness and because routine dental x-rays can still be made during orthodontic treatment.
