Your braces are the key to the smile of your dreams, which is why it’s important for you to take proper care of them. Braces have many benefits – straightening your teeth for one, as well as improving your dental health overall. Still, you may feel frustrated sometimes at the appearance of your braces or the foods you can’t eat, but remind yourself of the perfect smile waiting for you just around the corner! So how do you maintain a positive relationship with your braces?

First, know that if you take care of your braces, they will take care of you. To help you maintain a positive relationship with your braces we recommend the following ways to care for your teeth:

Floss:      It’s best to floss at least once a day to clean the spaces between your teeth and prevent gum disease. Flossing with braces may be tricky  – so if you need help flossing, ask your orthodontist for suggestions like a floss threader.

Avoid eating sticky or hard foods:  If you eat foods like toffee, caramel, or gummy candies, you are likely to break a bracket or wire. If you take proper care of your braces, they are more likely to be removed on time! Avoiding sticky foods and candies is one way to ensure that.

Chew with your back teeth:  Chewing with your front teeth increases the opportunity for breaking wires and brackets too.  For example, instead of biting into an apple and chewing with front teeth, cut the apple into small pieces, pop the pieces in your mouth, and chew them with your back teeth.

Wear your orthodontic rubber bands and head gear:  It may seem annoying to wear your equipment, but wearing it at the proper times ensures your treatment goes as anticipated. Not wearing your rubber bands or headgear could increase your treatment time by months! Wear your gear as instructed for the best and quickest results.

By following the advice above, you have a much greater chance of finding your dream smile as soon as possible. The other key ingredient is visiting your Richmond, VA orthodontist. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, contact your Richmond orthodontist today.
