While braces are usually not painful, some minimal discomfort may result following your fitting or adjustments with Dr. Paul White, Richmond’s favorite award-winning orthodontist. During the first three days after getting braces, you should be cautious with the foods you choose and how you prepare them. You may experience a mild tenderness when you bite. These uncomfortable symptoms usually only last a few hours, and can be alleviated with over-the counter pain medication, such as Ibuprophen. You can also try a salt water or hydrogen peroxide rinse (using one part water and one part hydrogen peroxide), or place a warm compress on the jaw to alleviate soreness following your fitting with braces.

What Can I Eat After My Braces Are Put On?

When you get your braces fitted, you may wonder what foods are the best options. During this time, cold and frozen foods can provide comfort by numbing the areas affected by discomfort. Your new braces may make it a bit difficult to chew at first, and you want to avoid damaging your braces. Soft and creamy foods are the best options for the first few days after getting your braces put on.

Here are a some snack ideas that are easy to eat with braces:

  • yogurt
  • pudding
  • jello
  • milk shakes
  • soup
  • ice cream
  • mashed potatoes

A little discomfort following orthodontic treatment is common. If the pain continues or you are ever unsure about the symptoms you are experiencing, please call our Richmond orthodontics office so we can assist you. The White Orthodontics’ mission is to help you get the most of your orthodontic treatment. Your time wearing braces should be as comfortable as possible.
